The Admirals and Sound Tigers needed extra time in each of their weekend games, taking one game apiece — Bridgeport winning a 4-3 OT decision on Saturday and Norfolk getting revenge in a shootout on Sunday, 3-2.
Casey Cizikas was the hero on Saturday night, scoring the goal that was only ruled a goal after a long video review by the on-ice officials. John Persson, Brock Nelson, and Ty Wishart were the other Bridgeport goal scorers. Colin McDonald continued his productive streak with two assists, and Anders Nilsson made 27 saves.
Norfolk responded by throwing everything they could at starting goalie Kevin Poulin on Sunday, and that included the kitchen sink. Poulin, however, responded extremely well for a goalie who hadn’t started in two weeks, not letting the Admirals onto the board until the final minute of the second period, when John Kurtz capitalized on a long pass from teammate Gabe Guentzel. That split the 2-0 Sound Tigers lead (John Persson, Nino Niederreiter) in half.
That was all Norfolk needed — they were able to find the equalizer on a shot by Devante Smith-Pelly (his second goal in two games) in the third. Poulin remained solid throughout the remainder of regulation and overtime, but once again Smith-Pelly had his number, firing home in the shootout to give the Admirals the extra point. Poulin finished with 52 saves on the night.
The Sound Tigers are back at it on Wednesday night against Albany at home. Puck drop is at 7 p.m.
