I was mercifully pulled away from watching the Saints lose to the St. Louis Rams (27-16) by a four-year-old’s birthday party. And not just any party–an Angry Birds Star Wars party.
While I was eating “Imperial Pigs in a Blanket” and birthday cake, Drew Brees was completing 39 of 56 passes, ending the afternoon with 393 and a passing touchdown. Brees also had a rushing touchdown in the fourth quarter, but the attempt for two points after failed. Unfortunately, Brees also had two interceptions and a fumble. Marques Colston was the Saints leading receiver with 92 yards and a TD on a five-yard pass from Brees in the fourth quarter.
The Saints also had eight penalties that cost them 88 yards. The Rams surprised the Saints with an onside kick in the first quarter. Saints coach Sean Payton even benched left tackle Charles Brown in the third quarter. Just not a good day for New Orleans.
Meanwhile, the Rams had a more balanced game. QB Kellen Clemens completed 14/20 passes for 158 yards and two TDs. TE Cory Harkey scored on a 31 yard pass from Clemens, and TE Lance Kendricks scored on a four yard pass. The Rams had 144 yards of rushing. The majority of that came from RB Zac Stacy, who had 133 yards and a TD.
The Saints had a chance to clinch a playoff spot with a win on Sunday, but now next week’s game against Carolina is a must win for the division. Ug.
So, yeah…watching the party goers play a life-size game of Angry Birds Star Wars was more fun and infinitely more memorable .
