For this week’s Tight End Tuesday, we are digging into the bunch of retired NFL players in order to celebrate the ol’ gunslingers birthday.
On Oct. 10, 1969, Brett Lorenzo Favre was welcomed into the world and boy were we lucky to be able to enjoy him each and every Sunday for 20 years!
Here is this week’s honorary Tight End Tuesday for the birthday boy, Brett Favre!
“Here is the thing to remember in all of this, there is never going to be another Brett Favre in the future. So I think all football fans..should be lucky that we can enjoy him do what he does best on Sundays…He is truly one-of-a-kind player. Where guys like Peyton Manning and Tom Brady are admired, Brett Favre is cherished. There is a big difference.” – NFL Films Steve Sabol on why he loves Brett Favre.
“He is always smiling and laughing out there, doing crazy things. Teammates, coaches, fans, and even opponents really fell in love with that. That is the beauty of this game, the ability to just play it and enjoy it and put it all out there on Sundays — and that is what Brett does better than anybody. So, whether you are a Packer fan or a Viking fan, you just have to tip your hat to the guy.” – Rich Gannon on why he loves Brett Favre
“I don’t know how it’s going to end, but I do know this: throwing a touchdown pass for the Green Bay Packers is pretty neat. Every one of them was a helluva lot of fun” – Favre in a 2007 SI piece
“Forget about all the records and all the numbers over 20 years of fantastic football. I think Brett Favre’s legacy will be that he loved to play the game, he loved to compete.” – Steve Mariucci
“His record for most consecutive starts will never be broken. It’s one of the most amazing records in sports. I guarantee you, he gets an immense amount of respect from every quarterback in the NFL for that record.” — Raiders quarterback Carson Palmer.
“There’s a difference between respect and fear. I respect a whole bunch of guys but I don’t really fear anyone in the league…I look at the really good teams and think, “Well, this is going to be tough.” And it is tough. I may get knocked down, but I get back up. I may get knocked down a lot, but I’ll always get back up again.” – Brett Favre in “For the Record: Brett Favre”
“I’ve got so many play running though my mind,” Favre said in an SI piece when asked about his favorite memory. ”The funny thing is, it’s not only about the touchdowns and the big victories. If I were to make a list, I would include the interceptions, the sacks, the really painful losses. Those times when I’ve been down, when I’ve been kicked around, I hold on to those. In a way those are the best times I’ve ever had, because that’s when I’ve found out who I am. And what I want to be”
…and boy, did Brett Favre turn out imperfectly perfect. In a way, he was just like everyone of us, so relateable.
“(Brett Favre’s) a football lifer. He is eternal youth, or as close to one as we’re going to get, a Huckleberry Finn who became a millionaire playing the game he learned as a kid.” – Minnesota journalist Jim Klobuchar
When Brett Favre entered the Vikings locker room for the first time in 2009, he broke the ice the only way he knows how: with a sense of humor.
“I’m Brett from Hattiesburg, Mississippi, and, I’m the only guy on the team born in the ’60s,” said Favre as he introduced himself to his new Vikings teammates like they had never heard of him before.
“They tell me that I look like a little kid out there. And in a way, I take that as a compliment. I like that fact that I can still enjoy life like a child can enjoy life. I always loved the magic of being a kid, the feeling that anything is possible.” – Brett Favre in “For the Record: Brett Favre”
“The Streak: it’s something as a player you just marvel at. It’s hard enough to get through one season, even one game, let alone 200-plus games. On the other hand, when I think of Brett, it’s not all that surprising. You would literally have to cut his legs off for him not to go out there and play.” – former Packers wide receiver Don Beebe
“He’s fearless. He has never been afraid to throw into triple coverage, for better or for worse, and that is what makes him so unique.” -former Vikings DE Bob Lurtsema
“Fans ask how I’ve been able to play for so long without missing a game. The easy answer is to say that it’s because I’m so doggone tough, or as Mike Holmgreen would say, because I’m so doggone hard-headed…The streak isn’t all about durability, though. It’s about ability, too.” – Favre on his streak in his 2004 autobiography
So happy birthday to the Silver Fox. We miss ya out there every Sunday!
