Monday Morning Blitz: Geno Smith, Brown QB Quandry, Matt Flynn and More

Geno Smith

It’s the Monday after Easter. I’m sure you are all coming down from food and candy comas, so take a big sip of your morning beverages and check out these headlines!

* Geno Smith. So who should draft West Virginia’s Geno Smith? Charley Casserly talked with NFL.com about who could possibly pick up the potential number one quarterback. Now. He said Buffalo. But this was obviously recorded prior to the Bills signing Kevin Kolb. He did suggest Arizona. But didn’t find it likely considering the Bills obvious need. I guess we will just have to see what happens.

ESPN is reporting, per sources, the Kansas City Chiefs will meet with Smith today. If that’s the case… poor Alex Smith.

* RG3 News and Notes! A little more information about the talk between President Barack Obama and Robert Griffin III was revealed Sunday. The President had some advice for the quarterback who will enter his second season this fall. Noting an injury that ended his spectacular rookie campaign, the president advised RG3 to protect himself on the field.

Yeah…

Good advice coming from the President who advised Michael Vick to learn how to slide!

* NFL Community Reaches out to Kevin Ware. RG3 was one of many NFLr’s to reach out to Kevin Ware, the Louisville basketball player, who suffered a horrible leg injury during Sunday’s Elite Eight game against Duke.

* Cleveland Brown QB Problems? The Cleveland Browns signed quarterback Jason Campbell last week. If this leaves you scratching your head wondering why, we’re in the same boat! The Browns have a fine QB in Brandon Weeden, who will enter his second season this fall. So what is up? Per NFL.com,  Weeden will get “most” of the first-team reps in off-season workouts, meaning Jason Campbell will at least begin the Browns’ off-season program firmly in a backup role. And there is still the 2013 NFL Draft. The Brown haven’t ruled out selecting a quarterback next month, though an underwhleming draft class might work to the advantage of both Weeden and Campbell. » Continue reading “Monday Morning Blitz: Geno Smith, Brown QB Quandry, Matt Flynn and More”

Sunday Morning Blitz: Kolb to Buffalo, Grimes to Miami

Cartoon screencaps, because why not... (Via YouTube)

Cartoon screencaps, because why not… (Via YouTube)

We’re closing in on the month of April, which means we are just a couple weeks away from the NFL Draft. But for now, let’s just get to the other news.

The Buffalo Bills added a quarterback to their roster Saturday night. They signed former Arizona quarterback Kevin Kolb to a two year deal, worth $13 million, according to various media sources. What this means for the quarterback situation, I’m not really sure. We’ll know after the NFL Draft though.

In other free agent news, the Miami Dolphins signed cornerback Brent Grimes to a contract Saturday. Grimes missed the entire season last year after injuring his Achilles tendon in week one.

Of course, the big talk of the weekend has been about Tony Romo’s contract extension with the Dallas Cowboys. If you’re expecting me to comment on namesake’s contract extension, I won’t give you that pleasure. If you want hot sprots takes in regards to Romo, well just go somewhere else for them. » Continue reading “Sunday Morning Blitz: Kolb to Buffalo, Grimes to Miami”

Tight End Tuesday: Anquan Boldin

Anquan Boldin is the newest member of the San Francisco 49ers and he is today’s Tight End Tuesday!

Boldin was drafted in the second round by the Arizona Cardinals with the 54th overall pick in the 2003 NFL Draft out of Florida State. He played for them until being traded to the Baltimore Ravens in 2010. On March 12, 2013, Boldin was traded to the San Francisco 49ers for a sixth-round draft pick.
Boldin was the 2003 NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year and has been selected to three Pro Bowls.

Wants some more photos? I got you covered!

Tight End Tuesday: Larry Fitzgerald

With nine seasons in the NFL with the Arizona Cardinals, Larry Fitzgerald has been one of the leagues most prolific receivers.

Fitzgerald was the third overall pick in the 2004 NFL Draft. He has a career record of 764 receptions for 10,413 and 77 touchdowns. Quite awesome considering he has only played for Cardinals! He signed an eight-year contract in August 2011  that will keep him in a Cardinals uniform through the 2018 season. That is why he is today’s Tight End Tuesday! More pictures ahead!  » Continue reading “Tight End Tuesday: Larry Fitzgerald”

Monday Morning Blitz: The Combine, Honey Badger and 50 Cent

Welcome to this week’s edition of the Monday Morning Blitz! I’ve got some fun stuff for you! Let’s get to it!

NFL Combine – Day 2

Day 2 of the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis including Wide Receivers, Running Backs and Quarterbacks. First off, our very own Kristine has this story on the top performances of Sunday and how this impacts their respective stocks in the draft. And, Gregg Rosenthal of NFL.com has this little ditty about what he learned at Day 2 of the combine.

Matt Barkley

Also, be sure to check out this story from NFL.com regarding Matt Barkley. The USC quarterback couldn’t throw at the combine due to a shoulder separation issue. Barkley, instead, stepped up and impressed with his brain skills. Barkley is rumored to have really impressed representatives with the Arizona Cardinals, who have the seventh overall pick in the 2013 NFL Draft.

What about Alex Smith?

Rumor had it in Indianapolis that Alex Smith could be on the move from the San Francisco 49ers. But where? According to NFL.com, Alex Smith could easily fit into Andy Reid’s west coast offense at Kansas City.

The Chiefs could also draft a quarterback for Alex to mentor. That worked really well for Alex this season. Right, Colin Kaepernick?

Smith could offer the Chiefs the best in terms of price tag in trade compensation and ability to make an instant impact.

Why not?

Honey Badger Don’t Give A…

So the Honey Badger … doesn’t want to be called that anymore!

Call him by his real name … Tyrann Mathieu. Since being kicked off LSU’s team for a university substance abuse policy violation, Mathieu was arrested in October for  possession of marijuana. After a stay in rehab and plenty of time for the cornerback to think about what went wrong, Mathieu says he is humbled and determined, trying to convince NFL personnel evaluators that he can be a star player. Check out the Sporting News story on Mathieu. And here’s a story from CBSSports.com about Mathieu just wanting to be trusted.

Also, because it does seem to be a trend the year, USAToday.com’s Jarrett Bell talks about the risk NFL teams take when drafting troubled individuals.

For Funsies

I know you love Erin Andrews just as much as I do! So, I present you this beautifully, awkward moment at Sunday’s Daytona 500.

Oh 50!

Um! 50′s grin might be the best part of this gif! … OK! It is!

Have an awesome Monday!

The Final Loser Rankings of the Season

Well, as you’re probably aware, the 2012 NFL regular season is over. The playoffs start this weekend and we’ll be crowning a Super Bowl champion in a month. Twelve teams will be playing for the right to hoist the Lombardi trophy. The rest of the league won’t be doing much for the playoffs, therefore that makes them losers. There’s a lot of losers to choose from, but I can only go with five.

1. Jacksonville Jaguars (2-14 record)- Kansas City could easily be in first, but the Jags had a rough patch to close out the season. There’s a lot of questions about where Jacksonville will go for the quarterback position. Maybe they go with Chad Henne, maybe they bring in that Jets quarterback people like talking about so much, who knows! Mike Mularkey will likely stay on as head coach, but general manager Gene Smith was fired Monday. Improving will definitely be a tough task for Jacksonville as they have to deal with a strong Houston team, as well as an improved Colts team. If that’s not enough, even the Titans are getting their act together.

2. Kansas City Chiefs (2-14 record)- Head Coach Romeo Crennel was fired Monday, but it looks like Scott Pioli is safe…at least right now. Maybe the Chiefs bring in Andy Reid, maybe they bring in Kirk Ferentz (or not.) But hey, the Chiefs will get the #1 overall pick in April’s NFL draft. Maybe they can put that pick to good use.

3. Detroit Lions (4-12 record)- The Lions went from being 4-4 in early November to…well 4-12. Everything fell apart for the Lions. Despite the bad season, both Coach Jim Schwartz and General Manager Martin Mayhew will be back for the 2013 season. Of course, one sports editorial from a daily Michigan newspaper in Midland is calling for Schwartz to be ousted. I’d like to think this is Schwartz’s response.

4. Arizona Cardinals (5-11 record)- The Cardinals win the fourth spot because they scored fewer points in the season than the Oakland Raiders. Arizona did clean house Monday when they fired GM Rod Graves and Head Coach Ken Whisenhunt. Arizona is in the Andy Reid sweepstakes, so maybe they can get him. Maybe Reid and Kevin Kolb can reunite and hang out together and stuff.

5. New York Jets (6-10 record)- Gee…I wonder why…Need more be said?

That’s it for this season of the Loser Rankings. Maybe you enjoyed it, maybe not.

Black Monday Brings Pink Slips

Black Monday is upon us and several surprises and not so big surprises took place. Let’s discuss!

* Arizona Cardinals. Head Coach Ken Whisenhunt and general manager Rod Graves are out. With more problems under center than one could fathom, in addition to a plethora of other issues, the firing of this duo is no surprise at all. It will be a breath of fresh air to see what is next for this team!

* Buffalo Bills.  Chan Gailey was let go after three seasons that went nowhere in Buffalo. Case in point, last season’s wonderful start and then collapse and then this season … well, their record ended up 6-10. Need I say more? I’m sure the frustrated fan base is ready for a big change. The status of general manager Buddy Nix is unknown.

* Chicago Bears. Lovie Smith is out. I am a little surprised with this move. But he did only go to the playoffs three times in nine seasons. Unacceptable for this rabid fan base, for certain. General manager Phil Emery took the job last year and will hire his own guy. Should be an interesting off-season in Chicago. Keep up with the team’s moves at Windy City Sweetness!

* Cleveland Browns. Coach Pat Shurmur and GM Tom Heckert.  Gone. No surprise! A 5-11 season. Two rookie sensations in Brandon Weeden and Trent Richardson. So much promise. So much fail. Look for new owner Jimmy Haslam to make some noise this off season! For more on the Browns, check out Dawg Treats!

* Kansas City Chiefs. Coach Romeo Crennel is out. GM Scott Pioli’s status is still in limbo. After a disappointing 2-14 season, moves were bound to be made. Hate to see Crennel out but … it’s safe to say he could use a break after this season and witnessing the suicide of player Javon Belcher.

* Philadelphia Eagles. Andy Reid is out. After 14 seasons as head coach. The only surprise here is that it took this long. Seriously. Expect lots of moves from the Eagles this off season too … including players!

* San Diego Chargers. Yeah, big surprise! Norv Turner and A.J. Smith are out. Again. Expect big moves this off season!

* New York Jets. GM Mike Tannenbaum was let go this morning but Coach Rex Ryan will stay on. Check out Kristine Reese’s story on this move at The Green Room!

* Jacksonville Jaguars. GM Gene Smith is out. Head Coach Mike Mularkey could be next.  For more on the Jags, check out Roaring Black and Teal!

Who is safe?

* Tennesee Titans coach Mike Munchak. But, personnel executive Mike Reinfeldt is out.

* Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said he hasn’t even thought about changing head coaches. So, Jason Garrett is probably safe! He may be asked to make some moves with his assistants though. An offensive coordinator that will help Tony Romo, maybe?

We will update this as more moves are announced today!

The Loser Rankings: Raising Arizona

No we’re not talking about the movie and I don’t have any planned video…as of yet…

I’ve decided to focus on one loser for today and that team is the Arizona Cardinals.

Remember when the Cardinals started the season 4-0? They were the team that beat New England and all that fun stuff. Well, I forgot and chances are you probably did too.

Arizona has lost nine straight games, most in the NFL. Even the Eagles were able to put an end to their losing skid. What’s your excuse, Arizona?

Next Cardinals quarterback

The big problem is the quarterback position. Kevin Kolb is out, so the Cardinals have had to turn to John Skelton and Ryan Lindley.

Neither Skelton or Lindley have played well this season. Skelton has two touchdown passes and nine interceptions in seven games. Lindley has five interceptions in four games.

Now the Cardinals aren’t necessarily a team that has had memorable quarterbacks. Kurt Warner is the obvious exception. But they’ve had a lot of quarterbacks over the years and for me to name them would be ridiculous.

There is one quarterback who has a majority of the Cardinals records though. That quarterback’s name is Jim Hart. Hart has the team record in passing yards (34,639), touchdowns (209), interceptions (247) and wins (87). Statistically speaking, Hart is the best quarterback.

However, Hart only guided the Cardinals to the playoffs twice in his 18 seasons with the franchise.

Things are bad this season for Arizona. They’re last in the league in scoring, averaging 14.3 points per game. It doesn’t help that they were shut out 58-0 on Sunday to the Seahawks.

The remaining games this season won’t be any easier for Arizona. Arizona has both Detroit and Chicago at home for the next two weeks. Chicago will still be in the playoff hunt.

If that’s not enough, the Cardinals get the 49ers for the last game of the season. San Francisco could be fighting for a bye or even homefield advantage for the playoffs.

In conclusion, I’ll leave you with this.

Seahawks Trounce Cardinals 58-0

The Seattle Seahawks handily defeated the Arizona Cardinals 58-0.

Yes. 58-0!

The Seahawks were led by Marshawn Lynch who had 11 carries for 128 yards and three touchdowns. Skittles. Get him some Skittles!

Russell Wilson completed seven passes for 148 yards. He had one touchdown pass to Zach Miller. He did thrown an interception.

The Seahawks defense, obviously, also had a pretty spectacular game. John Skelton was the starting QB for the Cardinals. He completed 11 passes for 74 yards. And four interception. Bobby Wagner and Richard Sherman each had two interceptions.

The Seahawks are now 8-5. Next up for Seattle is a trip to the East Coast for a game against the Buffalo Bills. The Cardinals are now 4-9 and take on the Detroit Lions next Sunday.

The Loser Rankings: Revamping the List

Another week, another Loser Rankings! And we have some good news for Cleveland and Jacksonville fans! They have nothing to worry about this week as their teams are not on the list of rankings. Enjoy the week off and keep up the good work of…well…trying to win games.

1. Kansas City Chiefs (1-10 record)- The Chiefs are the only team in the NFL with double-digit losses for the season. As a matter of fact, they’re the only team in the NFL that has just one win. Heck, even Jacksonville has two wins…now…but still! The remaining five games on their schedule are: Carolina, at Cleveland, at Oakland, Indianapolis and at Denver. They probably have a chance to win in two of those games. There’s a very real possibility that Kansas City finishes the season 1-15.

2. Philadelphia Eagles (3-8 record)- You know how long it has been since we’ve had a NFC team in the top two on this list? We haven’t had one since the Halloween edition. Sure enough, the Eagles find themselves on the list, climbing ever so higher. Granted, the team is decimated by injuries. But hey, they did lose to Carolina on Monday night. They need to win out if they even want to say they had a shot to make the playoffs. If they lose to Dallas Sunday night, it will be the first time the Eagles finish with a sub-.500 record since 2005.

3. Arizona Cardinals (4-7 record)- Remember all the fun talk about the Cardinals hot start in the NFC West? Well, that pretty much disappeared! The Niners are running away with this division. And with the success the Rams and Seahawks have had this season, the Cardinals are in danger of being the basement dwellers of the NFC West. The Cardinals need to get it together against the struggling Jets this week.

4. Oakland Raiders (3-8 record)- Yes, the Raiders are on the list. And you know why, it’s because they’ve lost four straight. All four of those losses were by 10 points or more. The Raiders should be higher, but with the fantastic losing effort from Philly and Arizona, the Raiders have a cozy spot at No. 4 this week. But hey, they do get Cleveland this week. Maybe things will go great and the Raiders can not be on the list next week.

5. San Diego Chargers (4-7 record)- I’m sure this irks some Raiders fans, but hey the Chargers stink! They’re horrible! HORRIBLE! And instead of ranting, I’m just leaving you with the video above of the armless people explaining the whole concept of the being known as Norval Eugene Turner.
