Players React to Released Greg Williams Soundbite

Seriously, another day, another story, another piece of evidence comes to light regarding the Saints and the injury bounties.  Today’s main headline was suppose to be the Saints appealing their punishments, but BOMBSHELL!!! Audio of a William’s rant before THIS YEARS play-off game (which Rodger already told them to STOP DOING IT) versus the San Francisco 49ers was released last night.  I won’t bore you with the details, because I’m sure you already read/heard Williams “kill the head” rant.  But what I think is important (because as fans we have NO IDEA about the mentality of a football player) is the reaction of current and retired NFL players.  Below are samples of players weighing in on twitter.

Carolina Panthers RB Jonathan Stewart:

Former Philadelphia Eagle DE Hugh Douglas:

Minnesota Vikings Punter Chris Kluwe (with dialogue from TE Visanthe Shiancoe)

Green Bay Packer OL Josh Sitton:

Former Miami Dolphins DE Jason Taylor

Buffalo Bills WR Donald Jones:

Former Houston Texans DT Seth Payne:

San Francisco CB Chris Culliver couldn’t even believe the words Williams was saying:

So to sum it up, both offensive and defensive players say Greg Williams’ speech with the addition of bounties is not common in the NFL.  It’s time for people who are sticking up for the Saints and saying “it happens everywhere” realize it doesn’t.  I know you have a sense of loyalty, but open your eyes and view it objectively, PLEASE!

It was hard to hear Williams’ audio, and yet, the Williams audio didn’t reveal anything new. It may not be as blatant, but there is evidence that the attitude does happen at every level of the sport. Maybe it’s time to give up romantic idea that football isn’t that violent. I don’t say this out of a sense of loyalty to a team, and I have said all along that the Saints violated NFL regulations.

  2. I have to admit that while I understand that this speech is not uncommon in the NFL (as so many players said today) it was still pretty hard to listen to. It sounds like these players and analysts felt the same way for a variety of reasons.

I think it’s fair to continue to discuss both sides of this argument, but it should be noted that what we think as fans and spectators is mostly irrelevant as the “resolution” (I can’t think of a better word at the moment) of the situation is up to commissioner Goodell. It’s in his hands now.
