How Can The Lakers Get Deron Williams

There is a ton of talk right now about the Lakers and Deron Williams, ever since the PG sat down with Mark Medina of the LA Times. Williams didn’t give away his hand. but let Medina know that he’d be just fine going to the Lakers.

What isn’t certain is the logistics of it. The Lakers can’t spend anymore money. They’re already over the cap. So if Williams goes to free agency, they can kiss him goodbye. However, he’s still technically a Brooklyn Net until July 1st. It would behoove the Nets to do a sign and trade because they’ll get something in return. Otherwise, Williams will walk away from his player option and they’ll get nothing.

They have to act fast though.

The other problem with this is that Williams has a one year player option, so would the Lakers sign him for one year only? He has to know he’ll get more money out on the FA market than the Lakers would be able to pay him next year, unless they’re able to trade away a lot of salary.

If they can unload Pau Gasol, that’s a huge contract they let go of. Metta World Peace is another guy getting way too much money, but he’s also the only hungry player they have besides Kobe.

There’s also the issue of the Mavericks potentially trading Lamar Odom to the Lakers rather than him waiting until December to join the team (one year after they traded him). But then they’ll have to pay him around $8 million, which he is definitely not worth in his current condition.

The Williams situation has a ton of variables involved.
