Daniel Descalso proved to be Mr. Clutch again Tuesday night when in the 11th inning, he hit a single to center allowing Allen Craig to hustle home the winning run.
The Cards beat the Padres 3-2 in 11.
Dirty Dan was 3 for 5 Tuesday night. He is proving to be the man you want up with runners in scoring position.
The Cards struck early as Lance Berkman singled in Joy Jay. The Padres took the lead 2-1 with a Brad Hawpe homer to drive in Ryan Ludwick. The game was quiet until the seventh inning when Ryan Theriot hit a grounder to second base. It allowed Descalso to score and Colby Rasmus move over to third.
Tonight was also the Major League debut for back-up catcher Tony Cruz. He was 3 for 5 and caught all 11 innings. Good job for his first day in the Bigs!
Kyle McClellan pitched six innings in the no decision. He gave up two runs and struck out four. The winning pitcher will be discussed later in this post.
Eduardo Sanchez got his fifth save of the season and got a lot of help from the outfield. Especially Lance Berkman! The Puma made this nifty, snowcone nab to get the first out of the inning.
Miguel Batista pitched the ninth and tenth innings to earn his third victory of the season. I guess that means you guys want a poem!
The Poet, May 24
You came in to get some work.
We all hoped you just wouldn’t make things hurt.
With lots of drama, anxiety and help along the way, you had a scoreless two inning of work.
Thank goodness the move to bring in you and Tyler Greene didn’t hurt!
I will add, there was a note of big, fat ugliness to this game. The Cards had 12 hits compared to the Padres two. It should have been a lot easier for the Cards tonight. Luckily, they do have some clutch and scrappy players!

Dirty Dan!
LB! (Maybe he should keep playing left? Didn’t Holliday volunteer to move to right before spring training?)
Another win! And now 10 games over .500 at 30-20 and first NL team with 30 wins (and only the Indians have 30 in the AL).
And The Poet didn’t screw anything up.
