Wednesday Headlines: Election Hangover

I stayed up far too late and have to be at work far too early, so all you get is a photo of President Obama and the news that baseball geeks really won last night’s election after Nate Silver once again predicted the outcome of the presidential election using statistics.

    Election results:

    Same President.
    Same Senate.
    Same House.

I looks to me like we are in store for at least 2 more years of the same nothing.

Change I can’t believe in. The democrats should be extremely depressed at the lackluster showing in the house races…everyone is so focused on the President getting re-elected…but his hands are still going to be tied.

It’s not that surprising, given how many republican statehouses got to redraw the district lines since the last election. Travis County, which is easily the most liberal county in TX, elected four Republicans to congress because of district lines that include large parts of Austin and the DFW and Houston suburbs.

Aah, the legacy of The Hammer. I feel bad for Texas on that-it may take decades to fix the harm that guy did….

While a majority of statehouses are under republican control right now…democratic statehouses are just as guilty of gerrymandering as the republicans are…just look at the map of Illinois right now.

It’s been a problem in this country forever. Not sure what can be done about it.

Oh yeah, I don’t deny that. Just saying that right now it’s not surprising that the Democrats did poorly nationally in house races.

If anything, this election shows how poorly the Republicans have managed to brand themselves (not that non-replublican politicians are much better). In a political climate that should have been gangbusters for them in general (struggling economy, redistricting, etc), it looks like they actually LOST ground in the Senate, and have a chance of doing the same in the house.

The republicans should have demolished the dems in the Senate races…the fiscal responsibility thing is a big time winning issue for them (despite what many liberals think), but they always seem to stumble over their feet on social issues. The tea party thing works well in smaller, more local races like for the house, but for state-wide races, it’s pretty difficult for them to gain support from moderates. That definitely was the case for the elections this year.

For the democrats, they better start showing that can somehow get something done and actually have positive results from those policies they have put in place because at some point (and it always happens) the party not in power will swing back toward the middle and pounce.

Cloture + rep majority in house = more obstruction. I can’t wait for the Republicans to blame the D’s for not getting anything done when they continue to shut down the government for another 2 years.

In CA, for once, some of the voters did not get fooled. The PAC ballot measure appears to have been defeated; and the even better news is that the money laundering investigation has now started, and with any luck the Koch brothers will be indicted. And Colorado, home of Focus on the Family, legalized pot! Who knew! I’m looking at the other states like Maryland and Maine, who voted to legalize same-sex marriage, and have hope that CA will grow up one of these days,so my relatives, and coworkers can gaet married too…

    • Doc Blume says:

I’m fairly sure that within 5 years, pot will be legalized in this country. It’s slowly been gathering bipartisan support and it might eventually be one thing that both sides will eventually agree to.

I think the same-sex marriage thing will probably get passed soon too. That, I believe, has more momentum than pot-legalization and it’s no longer a winning issue for Republicans who were able to use that issue quite effectively to their advantage a decade ago.

If you guys are going to talk politics all day, I’m going to go away. I realize this may not be viewed as something unpleasant, but there it is.

Okay, let’s talk about the next Cubs announcer. I’ve been thinking about it, and as previous posts have stated if the Cubs leave WGN, to go to a sports channel of some sort, the announcers could go as well. Given that possibility, who among the candidates left would do well in the broadcast job?

All the breweries have only 1 tv.They don’t want to be sports bars. But what I would have given for another tv for 1 night.

Sounds as if US Cellular Field will be named something else by 2014.

I suppose that’s going to bring up the naming rights at Wrigley argument again.

Also, since the Cubs are apparently looking at Karros, who is a total homer for the Dodgers currently, how important is it for the announcer to be seen as a part of the Cubs ,vs. broadcasting skills….

    • Doc Blume says:

Bob Brenly wasn’t a “homer” and never played for the Cubs and he was great. In fact, I almost prefer a non-Cub in that position.

      • sloanpeterson2 says:

Being a former Cub to me is not as important, as having basic broadcaster skills, which Karros and some others lack. Since I pay for MLB Network, and get cut out of the Cubs games so much, I watch the other teams announcers, and there are some good announcers out there, like the Giants team of Krukow & Kuiper. I even enjoy Jerry Remy from time to time. A non-cub is okay; a non-professional,annnoucer not okay…

I thought of Doc when I read this in the Daily Herald:
A writer brought up Riggleman as Brenly’s replacement.

So they legalized marijuana in Colorado…

Which leads me to believe that the Colorado Rockies will never be good again….

And they will be selling a lot of Doritos at Coors Field.
