The latest news is that Ryan Dempster’s hissy fit seems to have worked. According to Jim Bowden, the Cubs and Dodgers are closing in on a deal, though nothing is official yet.

today has been a total loss for me at work.
Same. Though it’s only noon. Still time to salvage the day!
Same here…and I have a major deadline coming up.
Like, 4:00 PM EDT?
Yeah…
I haven’t been able to complete this damn trade with the office in LA for over a week now.
RT @Kevin_Goldstein My understanding is that Cubs really want Webster &are trying to add to Dempster in order to get him. Deal not done yet.
Goldstein is really high on Webster…as are the Cubs apparently. I don’t really like the kid that as much…
But for Dempster, I think it would be a pretty good get…now if the Cubs have to give up a bunch of other young players to get him? Not so much.
My best friend’s sister’s boyfriend’s brother’s girlfriend heard from this guy who knows this kid who’s going with the girl who saw Dempster heading to O’Hare. I guess it’s pretty serious.
See…it stuff like that which would be just awesome on twitter.
too many characters.
Alright, then — ORD
I get sick, sleep in, and then the Cubs deal Reedz? What next, Castro,Campana, and Rizzo? At least the Dempster drama will be over soon, and Cubs can go back to booing Soriano if he’s still a Cub….
Buster Onley is hinting that a Garza for Justin Upton trade may be in the works.
shut the front door!
and then Onley tweets that the Cubs are on his No-Trade list…
Seriously Buster? WTF!
And now about 12 other people are saying that Onley was indeed full of shit.
I’m so very confused.
(in trade-unrelated news, there’s this:
http://www.csnchicago.com/baseball-chicago-cubs/cubs-talk/Marlins-demote-Zambrano-to-bullpen?blockID=749063&feedID=10336)
I don’t know why that amuses me, but it does.
zomg this is SOOOOO exciting!!!!111
Jim Bowden, the guy who said the Dempster deal was done, is now saying the deal is not done and that the Cubs are negotiating with another team.
Hilarious that, once again, the Chicago media is completely on the sidelines. Heh.
It’s amazing to think how much of the Cubs narrative has been tied to selling newspapers up until the Ricketts came in.
When the narrative changes, the old story tellers tend to become irrelevant.
Yankees are now back in the Dempster discussion (via Bob Nightengale)…along with the Nats and the Rangers.
Good grief.
now “deep” into negotiations with yankees, supposedly.
As long as the Cubs don’t take Larry Rothschild in exchange, I’d be okay with that.
And now yankees talks aren’t serious. i think im going to tune this out and go do some work.
Maybe we can get Prior back!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p6WoXiSUz8A
ahahahahaha!
He’s with the Red Sox, not the Yankees.
Same thing.
Don’t tell them that.
I wonder what time Dempster generally gets to Wrigley on his start days.
I’m half tempted to head over there and stake it out, although I wouldn’t be surprised if he’s already there. Shoulda done a stake-out this morning.
DAMN having to work for a living!
I would assume most players arrive at the ballpark about 3 to 4 hours before gametime.
I have gotten nothing done today
Ditto.
As long as the Dodgers lose out that’s good news!
Now the interwebs are saying the Garza/Upton rumors are totally baseless.
Somebody is messing with us!
Why do I have the mental image of Jim Hendry making crank calls to Buster Olney?
You think Buster would take a call from Hendry?
that’s why it’s a CRANK call.
you’re a crank call.
So, Dempster has said he would agree to a trade with the Yankees.
Does that mean there’s a trade in place and he’s waiving his clause, or does that mean hypothetically he would accept one, and they asked so as not to waste time talking to people who he’d eventually reject?
Like last time.
Yeah, because that plan clearly panned out with the Braves.
exactly
as long as he doesn’t take a nap, I think we’re okay.
I can’t concentrate at all on doing 5 on 5s today.
Let’s do them as a team! I have to have them done by 2:00 pm, tho.
1. Make a sports prediction for August.
Soriano will be traded after he clears waivers.
The Lions (professional rugby team) will be the most promising team in Chicago.
Jim Bowden: Dodgers either blink on Webster or watch Dempster put on pinstripes.
I trust TheoJed. If this were Hendry, I’d prepare for a major bungling. But I have to trust that JedTheo knows what he’s doing here.
Honestly, Jim Hendry really never bungled a trade. He pretty much got whoever he wanted and got that player for as much or less than he intended to surrender.
Now his choice of players that he acquired…that is another issue.
In fact, the only trade that I ever felt he “bungled” was the Derrek Lee trade to the Angels…and the reason that was bungled was because he didn’t do a good enough job in working with Lee on getting him to drop his no trade clause.
I haven’t heard Brian Roberts’ name once this season. I feel . . funny.
The whole Brian Roberts thing was more of an issue that Peter Angelos refused to allow him to be traded.
Dempster has supposedly told the Cubs that his list of teams he would accept a trade to: Yankees, Dodgers and Rangers.
Rumors now seem to indicate that Cubs and Dodgers are finishing up the deal.
I’m off to a meeting. Tell Theo not to do anything until I get back!
Theo told me he doesn’t have to listen to you anymore.
Soriano to the Tigers is the rumor of the minute.
Me likey.
Yes, it doesn’t make any sense for him to go to an NL team.
So Jed’s got 3 players on the block and 50 minutes . . . what are the odds?
Watching MLB network -they are claiming that the Dodgers will not give up any of their top prospects for a “rental” like Dempster….
So pull the trigger on the Yankees and move on.
And as much “pressure” as we feel Jed is under to unload Dempster, the Cubs can tender him an offer and get a compensatory draft pick.
We’re all giddy and eager for a trade, but the onus is not on the Cubs here.
It’s the Dodgers brass who have the pressure. They’re the ones trying to acquire. When the clock is ticking, will they blink? I think the repercussions of their not getting someone is worse than the repercussions of the Cubs not trading someone.
… except that Dempster will have to contend with trying to pitch the rest of the season while ducking batteries flung from the grandstands.
That’s Dempster’s problem, not the Cubs’.
The problem is that I feel that Dempster would accept the tendered contract…at which point, the Cubs would still be stuck with him and he’d still have no-trade rights.
I believe that the Cubs will trade Garza just before the deadline and keep Dempster.
Someone should do a “War Room” type documentary and have all-access behind-the-scenes cameras in a GM’s office for the week leading up to the trade deadline. That would make compelling watching.
Dodgers out of Dempster race per LA sports reporters…
Garza now being taked about going to Az?
Tick . . tock . .
The problem now being, of course, that 57 deals could be transmitted to the commissioner’s office at 3:59 EDT, and it can take hours for them to be vetted and approved.
I’ve been sitting here all day waiting for the clock to strike 3, when in fact we won’t know anything final until this evening.
And . . after that? Come the waiver trades.
This is kind of a bogus deadline.
Jim Bowden is claiming he’s heard that Dempster has been acquired by the Yankees…but he’s still getting confirmation.
Remember, earlier in the day he said the deal with the Dodgers was finished.
That makes sense to me. The longer it went, the less likely the Dodgers seemed to me, personally. I would buy Yankees first, then no deal (remaining a Cub) second, and then Dodgers last.
I’ll also be surprised if Soriano to Tigers is not made official shortly.
Anything on Garza?
Bowden was 0-for-the-day. Guess he’s as good a reporter as he was a GM.
Yankees now out of Dempster race? Texas is in?
Dempster to rangers!!!!!!!!!!!
Dumpster to the Rangers
So it wasn’t a bluff. Huh.
Dempster get tax break moving to Texas?
MLB Network is dissing the A’s for not making trades….
the RANGERS?!?!?!?
I told you guys not to do anything until I got back!
Yeah, kinda not possible when you get back after the deadline has passed.
It wasn’t my fault.
How can I possibly be expected to handle a game thread on a day like this?
Mahlom-twittered his thanks to the Cubs/fans….
Huh.
MLB network is running the tweets of players traded. Nothing so far from Dempster…
he’s going to wake up from his nap and tell us that THERE IS NO TRADE.
Yeeeah, I wouldn’t recommend that.
RT @Evan_P_Grant: Sources: Rangers send 3B Christian Villanueva and RHP Kyle Hendricks to Cubs for Dempster.
Good Lord. Kyle Hendricks was born in 1989. He’s barely street legal.
RT @JonHeymanCBS: scout says christian villanueva, young 3b who went to #cubs in rangers deal is quite good. top 100 prospect in baseball.
So who is pitching in Dempster’s place?
cubs.com says “TBD”
LOL
Anything on Garza or Soriano?
We think Soriano wasn’t traded. No word on Garza.
Both staying with the Cubs. Yankees were interested in Soriano, but the Cubs did not want to eat the salary…
Now what am I supposed to do for the rest of the day?
Find out what happened with Soriano and Garza!
What are we paying you for?!?
Soriano wasn’t traded. Garza has been in the delivery room with his wife all day. If he was moved, I think we’d know by now.
Bob Nightengale says Soriano is here for the week, at least:
https://twitter.com/BNightengale/status/230382996165902337
What, does she work at UPS or something?
*sad trombone*
Well, where’s the game thread then?
Hello?
HELLO?
*crickets*
everyone passed out
Casey coleman to start….
is it too late to get Dempster back?
As far as Soriano…I believe there are 2 or 3 teams interested in him…but the Cubs are in no rush to trade him right now since he will easily clear waivers. I do think he’ll be traded before the end of August…perhaps in the next couple weeks.
The Aerys Dodgers affiliate (Foul Territory) doesn’t seem to have any opinion on the lack-of-Dempster trade, or the trading deadline in general.
Nor, for that matter, does the Rangers site (Big Game Claws).
Julie, you need to crack some skulls over there!
Jed Hoyer has said that the Cubs and Dodgers were never really close on a Dempster trade and that they were looking more at Garza.
Anyone heard from Jim Bowden since this all went down?
*snort*
He sure didn’t have a very good day.
It’s time for him to just quit.
I’m liking the two prospects the Cubs got from the Rangers.
Can we just use this as a game thread?
It’s AJ Burnett vs. Casey Coleman. Boom. There you go.
Seriously? We’re at 117 comments and you don’t want to do a game thread?
We were only at 100 comments in the other thread and you overflowed it to here.
Do a damn game thread, slacker!
I’ll whip something up unless Carl stops me.
thanks
David Kaplan has said that the scouts he’s talked to have said that the Cubs really didn’t get much for Dempster and that the Atlanta trade collapse really screwed Jed and Theo over.
I would have to agree…Delgado was a much big “get” than these too kids…but I also thought that Delgado was a hell of a lot more than I ever imagined the Cubs would get for Dempster.
Not so sure. I’ve read that both players project to be major league players in the not too distant future (1-3 years). They may not be awesome major leaguers, but getting two players of that caliber for a rental pitcher seems pretty good to me. I would have preferred Delgado as well. But I like what the Cubs got. And it’s a MUCH better option than keeping him and getting nothing.
A World Series ring is certainly a lot more possible with the Rangers than with either L.A. or Atlanta.
They should score a few more runs for him than the Cubs did.
After reading on all the deals for the last hour, seems to me we got a nice haul for a bunch of meaningless players. Now if we can dump Soriano and some of that salary it would be a near perfect trade season other than having to keep Marmol and that bloated salary for 1 last season.
really impressed with Theo and Co thus far. Seems they have done just about all they could humanly do thus far with this heaping pile of shit that they inherited.
Now hopefully we get to have a look at Jackson, Vitters and maybe 1-2 more future possibles this season.
Yeah, come to think of it, it is pretty surprising there was no apparent interest in marmol. I know he’s kinda sucked, but hard throwing young relievers are usually easy trade bait.
Major head cases are NOT trade bait.
