The latest news is that Ryan Dempster’s hissy fit seems to have worked. According to Jim Bowden, the Cubs and Dodgers are closing in on a deal, though nothing is official yet.

RT @Kevin_Goldstein My understanding is that Cubs really want Webster &are trying to add to Dempster in order to get him. Deal not done yet.

Goldstein is really high on Webster…as are the Cubs apparently. I don’t really like the kid that as much…

But for Dempster, I think it would be a pretty good get…now if the Cubs have to give up a bunch of other young players to get him? Not so much.

My best friend’s sister’s boyfriend’s brother’s girlfriend heard from this guy who knows this kid who’s going with the girl who saw Dempster heading to O’Hare. I guess it’s pretty serious.

I get sick, sleep in, and then the Cubs deal Reedz? What next, Castro,Campana, and Rizzo? At least the Dempster drama will be over soon, and Cubs can go back to booing Soriano if he’s still a Cub….

Hilarious that, once again, the Chicago media is completely on the sidelines. Heh.

It’s amazing to think how much of the Cubs narrative has been tied to selling newspapers up until the Ricketts came in.

When the narrative changes, the old story tellers tend to become irrelevant.

I wonder what time Dempster generally gets to Wrigley on his start days.
I’m half tempted to head over there and stake it out, although I wouldn’t be surprised if he’s already there. Shoulda done a stake-out this morning.
DAMN having to work for a living!

  15. gravedigger says:

So, Dempster has said he would agree to a trade with the Yankees.

Does that mean there’s a trade in place and he’s waiving his clause, or does that mean hypothetically he would accept one, and they asked so as not to waste time talking to people who he’d eventually reject?

    Like last time.

I trust TheoJed. If this were Hendry, I’d prepare for a major bungling. But I have to trust that JedTheo knows what he’s doing here.

      Thumb up 0

      • Doc Blume says:

Honestly, Jim Hendry really never bungled a trade. He pretty much got whoever he wanted and got that player for as much or less than he intended to surrender.

Now his choice of players that he acquired…that is another issue.

In fact, the only trade that I ever felt he “bungled” was the Derrek Lee trade to the Angels…and the reason that was bungled was because he didn’t do a good enough job in working with Lee on getting him to drop his no trade clause.

Dempster has supposedly told the Cubs that his list of teams he would accept a trade to: Yankees, Dodgers and Rangers.

Soriano to the Tigers is the rumor of the minute.

    • abefrohman says:

Yes, it doesn’t make any sense for him to go to an NL team.
So Jed’s got 3 players on the block and 50 minutes . . . what are the odds?

  21. sloanpeterson2 says:

Watching MLB network -they are claiming that the Dodgers will not give up any of their top prospects for a “rental” like Dempster….

    Thumb up 0

  22. abefrohman says:

And as much “pressure” as we feel Jed is under to unload Dempster, the Cubs can tender him an offer and get a compensatory draft pick.
We’re all giddy and eager for a trade, but the onus is not on the Cubs here.
It’s the Dodgers brass who have the pressure. They’re the ones trying to acquire. When the clock is ticking, will they blink? I think the repercussions of their not getting someone is worse than the repercussions of the Cubs not trading someone.

  23. Doc Blume says:

I believe that the Cubs will trade Garza just before the deadline and keep Dempster.

Someone should do a “War Room” type documentary and have all-access behind-the-scenes cameras in a GM’s office for the week leading up to the trade deadline. That would make compelling watching.

  28. abefrohman says:

The problem now being, of course, that 57 deals could be transmitted to the commissioner’s office at 3:59 EDT, and it can take hours for them to be vetted and approved.
I’ve been sitting here all day waiting for the clock to strike 3, when in fact we won’t know anything final until this evening.

And . . after that? Come the waiver trades.
This is kind of a bogus deadline.

  29. Doc Blume says:

Jim Bowden is claiming he’s heard that Dempster has been acquired by the Yankees…but he’s still getting confirmation.

Remember, earlier in the day he said the deal with the Dodgers was finished.

    Thumb up 0

    • abefrohman says:

That makes sense to me. The longer it went, the less likely the Dodgers seemed to me, personally. I would buy Yankees first, then no deal (remaining a Cub) second, and then Dodgers last.

I’ll also be surprised if Soriano to Tigers is not made official shortly.

      Anything on Garza?

The Aerys Dodgers affiliate (Foul Territory) doesn’t seem to have any opinion on the lack-of-Dempster trade, or the trading deadline in general.

David Kaplan has said that the scouts he’s talked to have said that the Cubs really didn’t get much for Dempster and that the Atlanta trade collapse really screwed Jed and Theo over.

I would have to agree…Delgado was a much big “get” than these too kids…but I also thought that Delgado was a hell of a lot more than I ever imagined the Cubs would get for Dempster.

    • hobohanson says:

Not so sure. I’ve read that both players project to be major league players in the not too distant future (1-3 years). They may not be awesome major leaguers, but getting two players of that caliber for a rental pitcher seems pretty good to me. I would have preferred Delgado as well. But I like what the Cubs got. And it’s a MUCH better option than keeping him and getting nothing.

  51. gidard says:

A World Series ring is certainly a lot more possible with the Rangers than with either L.A. or Atlanta.
They should score a few more runs for him than the Cubs did.

After reading on all the deals for the last hour, seems to me we got a nice haul for a bunch of meaningless players. Now if we can dump Soriano and some of that salary it would be a near perfect trade season other than having to keep Marmol and that bloated salary for 1 last season.

really impressed with Theo and Co thus far. Seems they have done just about all they could humanly do thus far with this heaping pile of shit that they inherited.

Now hopefully we get to have a look at Jackson, Vitters and maybe 1-2 more future possibles this season.
