Before we get to tonight’s game, I would be remiss if I didn’t mention two big issues I had with last night’s game.
First, I’m sick of this “we don’t show fans on the field” broadcast rule. Let’s be honest, baseball is often boring. Â Let’s be more honest, streakers are funny. Showing a streaker every now and again in a 1-0 game against the Astros in late September could really boost WGN’s ratings.
Second, the streaker who took to the field last night was, by all accounts, “a hippie.” As I didn’t see said streaker, I can’t verify, but Bob Brenly is old enough to know what a hippie looks like, so I trust his judgment. What kind of stadium organist doesn’t have the presence of mind to break into “Age of Aquarius” or “Hair” when there is a naked hippie on the field? That should be grounds for immediate dismissal.
Fortunately for us (anyone really want to see Mike Quade naked?), the Cubs will be going for a different kind of streak: a win streak.
The Cubs haven’t won back-to-back games since May 3-4; many moons ago when we felt like we were still in this thing. Will the Cubs be able to get another streak going? Only time will tell, but Casey Coleman (1-3, 7.22) is taking the mound tonight, so the chances aren’t good.
The Marlins will send RHP Chris Volstad (2-2, 5.77) to face the Cubs formidable (cough!) lineup. Tonight that lineup is:
- Fukudome RF
- Barney 2B
- Castro SS
- Ramirez 3B
- Pena 1B
- Byrd CF
- Johnson LF
- Hill C
- Coleman P
Why is Reed Johnson in tonight’s lineup? Because he’s got a craaaazy .410 average against Marlins pitching over his career. Why is Koyie Hill in the lineup? Your guess is as good as mine.
First pitch is at 6:10 pm tonight on CSN and WGN Radio.
Let’s go streaking!

The organist should have also played the following for the streaker:
Blue Moon
Bad Moon Rising
There’s a moon out tonight
Full moon and empty arms
That’s all I’ve got for now…
This just in: Tony Campana is adorable.
if you’re into guys who look like they could have been in ‘The Sandlot.’
I don’t know that I want to make a sexy time, I just think he’s cute.
re: hill- didn’t he go 3-3, score 3 runs, & had a sac bunt last nite?
i thought fukodome scoring from 1st on a single was notable. slackerano could take notes on baserunning and we could possibly have 5! starters over .300 if ramirez continues to climb. baker with 75 at bats is at .347. c’mon pitching! “hey these F#%^&#*@ guys don’t look too bad” I know we still suck but…
does anyone know of anyone who still sells the old CARD BASEBALL game. they used to advertise it years ago out of osco drugs on wgn. I have a complete game myself but a friend was wondering.
o yeah, i think the streaker shows good fielding technique.
Strat-O-Matic? Or something else?
the game had just ‘Card Baseball’ on the box. it’s a boardgame that tou playwith baseball cards, and the game comes with dice, 2 cards that say what happens when you roll the dice, and 2 decks of cards labeled hits and outs.
I remember Len once bringing up that he used to play some card baseball game when he was a kid. Can’t think of what it called, although I remember looking it up once after he mentioned it.
It was kind of a precursor to creating a full season in a baseball video game, as you could play a whole fake season with these cards, keep up with stats for players, standings for teams, etc.
i got mine in the 80′s. but anyway i was just checking. thanx.
tonite’s game is a warm-up for the sweep of the red sox. hopefully saturday on FOX it will be on in my area. it was freaking aggravating last week when it seemed the whole nation was shown the yankees(again) even though they had regional games. my son in s.d. cal. had to watch the yanks-sox and he really thought they would get to see s.f.-cubs out there. peace. out.
baturkey wants to be my friend on LinkedIn! We’re totally besties now.
On a side note, all my LinkedIn connections have much more important jobs than me.
Mine, too.
Except for me! Though I do provide food for people, which is pretty important.
I don’t know what you’re doing now, but you used to make the donuts. What’s more important than that?
Deli Managing! Slinging fried chicken and processed deli meat at obese Indianans.
I knew THAT. I just didn’t know if donuts still played a prominent role.
you still have a job?
One funny thing Len/Bob said last night re: the streaker, was that it was a good thing for him that the weather was nice and warm there as opposed to cold, rainy Chicago. I LOL’ed.
Casey Coleman made it out of the first! Hooray!
I’m not going streaking.
The Daytona Cubs really should just put Brenly on the promotions payroll.
They look like a bunch of douchey fratboys.
That streaker looks like the penultimate ape before Homo Sapiens on those pictures illustrating evolution.
I think that’s Carl, isn’t it?
I think he looks Amish.
He’s definitely foraging for nuts or seeds
I’m pretty sure he’s Dwight Shrute’s cousin Mose. Is there some sort of beet farming convention going on in Miami?
Good job Marlon.
From Golden Sombrero to Home Run King!
Who are the Marlins fans chanting “over-rated” at?… it can’t be Aramis.
It’s not like Cubs fans over-rate him or anything
They were probably referring to their own team.
Starlin hasn’t had an adventurous throw to 1B in a while… maybe he’s figured it out.
or maybe he’s due for another 8 error inning.
Well Coleman did his part tonight…
Don’t fuck it up, bullpen.
If the Cubs fail to blow a lead two days in a row, I’m not going to know how to feel.

Either the Cubs swept the series, or Pat (aka Pigpen) walked by and berselius is sweeping up after him.
Glad to see the Cubs win! My block had Internet problems, and I couldn’t see the game anyway, so I watched the Smallville finale….
