Was it painful? Unbearably.
Was it cleansing? Not really.
How do I feel now? Depressed. Especially comparing the 2003 team to the 2011 team.
But I still don’t think Alou would have caught it.
I will say this. Steve Bartman, wherever you are, I hope you’re happy and fulfilled in your life.
With the pain from 2003 still raw, we have two more games to go before 2011′s fresher, duller pain is over.
Tonight Matt Garza makes his final start of the season. He’ll face Anthony Bass (2-1, 1.66) tonight at PetCo Park. I don’t know who AJ Bass is, but he has a better ERA than anyone in the entire Cubs organization, so I’ll reserve any snarky comments.
Tonight’s lineup:
- Castro SS
- Barney 2B
- Ramirez 3B
- Pena 1B
- LaHair RF
- Soriano LF
- Byrd CF
- Soto C
- Garza P
First pitch is at 9:10 pm CT on CSN.

I place half the blame for 2003 on Dusty Baker for not calming things down and/or replacing Prior; and the other half on Pisshands Alou for making such a fuss in the first place.
No blame to Alex Gonzalez because I’ve played infield and there’s no way I’d have not made an error in those circumstances.
Yes, but you don’t get paid millions of dollars to make that play. He did.
It’s not his fault he gets paid millions of dollars. That’s Jim Hendry’s fault.
The reason certain guys play pro baseball and others don’t is because some people ARE SUPPOSED TO MAKE THAT PLAY.
What Julie said. I think he was thinking too much about the juicy DP he thought he was going to turn.
I place ALL the blame on Dusty.
Errors happen.
Fan interference (or not) happens.
Dusty sat on his ass, chewed his toothpick, but did not go to the mound and TAKE COMMAND of the emotions of his team on the field right then. That was one of the key situations a manager earns his pay for and Dusty blew it.
To paraphrase: Dusty being Dusty.
I blame the entire team for (a) blowing a 5-3 lead in Game 7 and (2) rolling over after blowing said lead. Florida took a 6-5 lead in the top of the fifth — after that, the Cubs managed one hit (a home run by Troy O’Leary, of all people) and one other baserunner (Aramis HBP leading off the ninth). Made me glad that the impending sense of doom I felt after Game Six kept me from watching or listening to the game in real time…
By the way, Kyle Farnsworth is closing for Tampa with their season theoretically on the line. Oh, irony — you are a cruel mistress.
I didn’t watch the whole thing, but I caught the last hour. I felt sick to my stomach…for that season and for Bartman. Just watching that, I felt terrible. I still want to smack the hell out Gonzalez…REALLY?? MAKE A PLAY!! What’s interesting is that the last ties to ’03 are about to be done. Aramis is leaving, Kerry is problably retiring, and Carlos is all but a Marlin (Isn’t it ironic…don’t you think?)
For those who missed “Catching Hell,” we’re going to have a review of it up tomorrow afternoon.
So, whats the score of the game?
2-0 Padres.
