Cubs Friday Headlines: Well, That Was Lame

I don’t really know what to add to this, other than “at least they finally showed some life. Kinda. I mean, look at the faces of the Cubs are they’re jogging out there to “fight:” still really bored. And it took the bullpen about 15 minutes to get there. I’ve been waiting for a fight all year, and I give this one a D-.  The only reason it doesn’t get an F is because an umpire fell down.  That made me laugh.

Worst. Fight. EVER.

Let’s talk about something other than baseball. Have you seen any good movies lately? Read any good books? Excited for football this weekend?

What’s going on with you?

(leans forward in rapt attention)

I’ve been playing video games, and chess, and reading books a bit but I don’t seem to leave much time for that.

The two books I’m in the middle of right now are:
_On Par: The Everyday Golfer’s Survival Guide_ by Bill Pennington, which I am enjoying immensely but I doubt I would recommend for the kind of people who hate golf, and
_Going Postal_ by Terry Pratchett, part of the Discworld series, but one which I would recommend for almost anyone, even if you haven’t read any other Discworld books (it is quite possibly my favorite in the series so far and it does not presume prior knowledge of the characters in the way that some of the other books do.)

The video games I’m in the middle of are:
    “Mario and Luigi: Bowser’s Inside Story” (which probably everyone else who plays Mario games beat two years ago, but I’ve been dealing with depression and headaches and am just getting around to playing it);
    “Sonic and the Black Knight” (Sonic the Hedgehog in Camelot, because SEGA and Sonic Team sorta ran out of good ideas a few games ago, but it’s more fun than I expected, but due to wii controls for swinging the sword, I have had to put it down because tennis elbow);
“The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker” which is about 10 years old but again I’m just getting around to it; and
“Mystery Dungeon: Shiren the Wanderer” which is a true classic if you like really hard and unforgiving turn-based puzzle-y dungeon crawl games, and crap if you don’t like such games.

As for the chess, I’m working on a pretty basic puzzle book because most of my games are still decided by pretty basic tactics; I could post a few example games if anyone here cares about chess enough to care, but I doubt anyone does.

Oh, all right, I can’t resist posting this one game I played in correspondence (I had white):
    1.b4 g5 2.Bb2 f6 3.e4 b5 4.Qh5#

…yeah, 4-move checkmate in correspondence, I am not sure how hard my opponent was trying there… most of my games are more interesting than that.

    Well, since you asked:
    1. Reading current issue of Consumer Reports, the October issue. haven’t yet gotten to the story about backup generators, which is why I bought the magazine.
    2. Read the September issues of Vogue,Lucky,Marie Claire,Glamour,Allure,Bazaar,Instyle, and People StyleWatch. Now really am depressed because winter is my favorite fashion season, and I will never wear any of it.
3.Loaded my Kindle with the new Kurt Anderson book,”True Believers”. plan to read it this weekend, since I don’t want to watch the Dodgers.
    4. PLan to finally watch Clinton’s speech at the DNC,as well as So You Think You Can Dance-I had to DVR them since Mommie Dearest insisted on watching the Dodgers over history. The Dodgers lost luckily…

Reading- “The Universe is a Green Dragon” Brian Thomas Swimme, “Cosmos and Psyche” & “The Passion of the Western Mind” Richard Tarnas, “Cosmos” Carl Sagan, “Soulcraft” Bill Plotkin, and that’s just for week 2 of classes.

If you’re into cosmology at all, these are all great books.

That’s right, my second semester of grad school started just in time to take my mind off this team. If only the Cubs could be as awesome as the Post 9/11 GI Bill.

Finally finished reading 50 Shades of Grey. The hot blond that forced me to read it still wont give me the time of day so now I’m drinking 50 Shades of Grey Goose.

Watched The Expendables 2, don’t watch this movie. Unless you really want to see bad acting and the cheesiest 80′s punchlines. I wouldn’t recommend this movie to my worst enemy.

    1. My wife and I watched “The Debt” a couple nights ago…with Helen Mirren. It was fair. Not good and not bad.

    2. I’ve just finished reading the novel “The Godfather”…as a big fan of the movies, I decided it was time to read the book. I have to say, it was pretty disappointing. Mario Puzo, while creating some good characters and giving some pretty good detail, really wasn’t a very good writer. In fact, I would go so far as to say Mario Puzo writing abilities were on par with a horny high school junior. In this particular case, the movies (part of Godfather 2 is based on this novel as well) were much better than the source material. And it shows that Coppola is a better movie maker than Puzo is a writer.

    3. Hell yes. But I just hope the Bears don’t embarrass me. I really really really really really need them to beat the Packers this year.

I read “The Godfather” my freshman year in high school, and actually wrote a book report on it. My teacher gave me an “A” and then sent a note to my mom asking why I was reading such “filthy” novels. She never did give me back my book report…

Been reading the Good War: an oral history of WWII. Must say I have enjoyed it so far.

I actually liked the Expendables 2. Thought the action and cheesy dialogue were enjoyable.

Saw Avengers for the third time last night. Such an awesome movie. Kinda bummed that the super duper phase one blu ray release is going to be delayed :(

Been playing Pokemon Black a lot.

    Go team!

“…I’m puzzled by a few things.
1st, shouldn’t they(Cubs)be playing better at this point of the season? The fans deserve and expect some improvement.
…3rd,do we see this team being relevant in 2 to 3 years? I don’t know, but to me they look like they have taken a step back.
2013 is a huge year for manager Dale Sveum.”

Hey, so what’s the deal with this Cubs team?
There’s not a lot of raw talent there, I guess, but we’re still seeing too many first-pitch swings . . nobody is working the count.
I thought the point of this year was to build some fundamentals, change the team approach, be more selective and draw more walks . . . et cetera, et cetera, et cetera.
Did Sveum just give up? If so, bring in someone else.
It’s one thing to have a team that totally sucks but appears to be working on the little things for long-term improvement. Is it just me? Is anyone seeing a turn-around in anything?
    And the pitching?
If Marmol “closes” one more game I’m going to . . I don’t know. Continue to not watch, I guess.

Just saw Brave. Couldn’t help but think of LOHO. Kept trying to plug in regulars here into their Brave roles.

Also saw Avengers…wow. Totally got my Super Hero geek on.

Books… I have been trying to make my way through every Hugo and Nebula award winning novel or a sci fi classic. Finished “The Forever War”(AWESOME), “Hyperion”(Pretentious), and “Mars”(meh).

    And now I’m realizing I’m a geek.
