If it wasn’t bad enough having to wake up early on a Friday, we’re back to this:
The Cubs are in. The Cubs are out. The Cubs are favored to get Prince. The Cubs don’t have enough cash for Prince. The Cubs are making a big push for Prince. The Cubs aren’t that interested in Prince.
Whatever. Shut up already. At this point, I don’t believe any of the beat writers, in Chicago or otherwise, are actually getting any information. I think they’re all getting tips from Phil Rogers’ infamous dog.
That’s ALL there is out there this morning. We’re still on Yu Darvish watch, but the conventional speculation at this time is that either the Blue Jays or the Rangers have the high bid on this one.
Don’t forget Wrigley Talk Friday is up today at 1 pm CT. We’ll talk about how there’s nothing to talk about.
Carl and I continue to man LOHO headquarters from outside the Starbucks on Wrightwood. If Theo stops by, we’ll let you know what he orders. That is, if Carl ever stops hogging the plastic binoculars to spy on dog walkers.
Finally, we want to know what you’re listening to on this iPod Friday. Fire up the ole iPod (or phone, laptop, spotify account, or MP3 player), hit “shuffle” and give us the first five songs that come up. No cheatsies. No judgment.

More people are coming out and saying that the Blue Jays are the likely winner of the Darvish bidding. It sounds, someone here did indicate, that we won’t know anything until early next week.
And as far as Fielder, I truly believe that Scott Boras is secretly floating the Cubs name out there to try to up the overall $ that someone will eventually pay Fielder. He did the same thing with A-Rod 10 years ago when the Yankees were supposedly interested (when they actually weren’t) and it helped drive up the price that the Rangers ended up paying. The Cubs are the only high revenue team that potentially could be interested, so Boras seeds the rumors that we are going after Prince.
I just think it’s hilarious that you could pick out 10 baseball writers, and 5 would say the Cubs are the favorites and 5 would say the Cubs are out.
What’s even funnier is that some supposedly respected reporters are on completely opposite sides of this.
I still say that Boras is just using the media to try to get Seattle to pay for 10 years/$250.
whenever I hear a free agent has Boras as their agent my desire to have them on the team immediately decreases. This might not be fair to the player, and I’m sure there are other agents out there that use some of his tactics, but there it is.
I still say the Cubs give Boras’s other 1st baseman client, Carlos Peña, another contract.
Also, re: the bids on Darvish, how hard is it to look at a bunch of bids and go “yep, that’s the highest one.’
Why on earth does it take 4 days for a team to do this?
Because it takes that long to figure out how to convert the dollar amount into yen.
I agree…this whole process is kinda silly. The Nippon Ham people don’t even know the identity of the team that made the highest offer…they just have a dollar amount. It’s a simple yes or no question. They should have had threshold determined a long time ago and if a team met or exceeded it, they should just immediately say yes.
Maybe someone got cute and offered either A. Euros or B. Groupon credits….
Not only that, but all the reports were saying the Fighters already planned to take the highest bid no matter what.
The White Stripes – Jumble Jumble
U2 – In God’s Country
Moxy Fruvous – Jared (The Wild Boy)
Erasure – Heavenly Action
Jonathan Coulton – Creepy Doll
I didn’t realize the LOHO headquarters had such nice windows. That makes it much more airy than I would have expected.
that’s how we spy on people.
That box reminds me of something- didn’t they have those in the 60″s. An orgone (sic) box?
Ken Rosenthal says the Cubs are the front-runners for Fielder.
(laughs hysterically and rocks back and forth)
Is LOHO going to try to annex the sandbox so you can put up the long-rumored “triangle box” ?
No comment. We’re putting Crane Kenney in charge of that.
If you use taxpayer money to build your triangle box, I’m going to boycott this site.
teebob must not have been by yet…I have no thumbs down yet today.
you even have a thumbs up!
IIIII have not been the anonymous down-thumber.
I come right out and tell you, “you should have your own blog.”
Take that how you will.
Well, nycguy was hanging around here yesterday…so I suppose it was him.
Not me… I’m not at all invested in this blog like the rest of you. Just browse occassionally for a dose of dork.
Natural to blame the unfamiliar new poster though, so you get a passing grade on the predictable exam.
Barry Bonds is to be sentenced today.
I’m hoping he gets life in prison.
He has life-he will never go into the Hall of Fame- all he was convicted of was lying. If lying got you into prison, Bush,Cheney, Miers, Rice, Gonzales,Powell,Gringrich,Cain, and many others would be looking at 50 years each. Sandusky deserves jail-fine Bonds and move on….
I don’t care if he lied or not, I just don’t like Barry Bonds and I don’t want to see him again.
That being said, despite everything, he deserves to go to the Hall of Fame based on his performance on the field before he started on the dope.
Which is, in itself, a good lesson.
I’ve shown my kids that: Roger Clemens and Barry Bonds, two of the best baseball players of all time, before they started steroids (allegedly).
They both would have been sure-fire HOFs, by keeping clean and working hard.
But they both (allegedly) wanted more. Being among the best ever wasn’t enough. So they cheated. And the result? No Hall of Fame.
It’s one thing to point out borderline players who get banned just trying to survive as a pro. But to show kids how much you can lose . . it makes as big an impact.
Anyway, there’s a lesson there. It’s too bad. Bonds was among the best ever, before he juiced.
And it’s too bad he’s always been such an angry, bitter, spiteful person. I went to dozens of Giants games in the 1990s. I never once saw him sign an autograph. Or smile.
2 years probation and 30 days house arrest. Meh.
It’s just not worth it to tell the truth under oath anymore.
If it makes you feel any better, it probably cost him a couple million in attorney’s fees.
He can afford it.
All the while, Rosenthal says the Cubs will sign Fielder. sigh.
Rosenthal also heard that Jim Hendry was keeping his job last summer after he supposedly was fired.

Hey, did anyone hear the Cubs are thinking of adding lights to Wrigley Field?! So long 81 day games a year!
I haven’t been reading this site much lately, so I apologize if someone has already mentioned that.
How dare they!
Way I hear it, Evers will request to be sold before he suffers the indignity of this so-called “night baseball.”
You showed me – Turtles
Lay lady lay – Dylan
South Street – Orlons
I’ve got something on my mind – Left Bank

“You showed me” is a great song by the Turtles, whom put out some great pop in the 60′s. As for Left Banke I prefer “Pretty Ballerina”…
I love that whole Left Bank album…
The harpsichord is one of my favorite instruments.
I, too, wish everyone would stop talking about Prince. Especially the Brewer Fans I work with. As much fun as it is to mock them, at some point I need to get some work done.
They also were not amused when I said that the Cubs’ purchase of the McDonald’s across the street from Wrigley was step one of their sign-Fielder-now strategy.
My five for today:
The Whole World Lost Its Head — The Go Go’s
Waterloo Sunset — The Kinks

Cubs are negotiating with Paul Maholm, according to Bruce Levine.
Uh . . okay?
I like Maholm.
Lefty, ground ball pitcher.
I’m not sure what to think about this. It potentially could be a decent signing.
It would also mean the end of Randy Wells in the rotation.
