That’s pretty much true. I don’t expect there will be any acquisition that the Cubs will make this year that is more exciting (except for Julie) than Deshaies joining the Cubs broadcast booth.
From a purely baseball point of view…if you sign him to a 3 year contract, he’ll probably give you 2 decent seasons…and have one stinker of season. (I don’t recall how good he was last year, but I do remember that he seems to be wildly inconsistent from year to year.)
From my personal point of view, I wouldn’t want him on the team. For a team that has little identity and isn’t likely to win many games, having this type of player on the team is probably going to turn fans off even more than they already are. Now I don’t think Theo and Jed are that concerned about that specifically, but if this team sucks and Escobar needs to be traded, I’m not sure he’ll really attract much interest around the league.
Just what we need a bad version of Alfonso Soriano. Gazillion strikeouts and 25 homeruns…….wait a minute didn’t we just add Mark Reynolds as our Asst Hitting Coach?
Mark Reynolds would make a lot less than Soriano, is younger than Soriano and walks more than Soriano. And he would likely be quite flipable at the deadline unlike Soriano.
This isn’t a long term fix for anything, but I think he would be an affordable and quite appropriate place filler/run producer for the next year or two.
His offense is fine, I’d be much more worried that he would give up as many runs with his glove as he would add with his bat. He’s as bad as Braun was at 3b.
I forgot about Garza since he was injured. I forgot about Spellcheck because I don’t like picturing him now that Julie describes him as a foot with hair.
What I don’t understand is they failed to offer Edwin Jackson a 13 million dollar qaulifying offer I guess because they were scared he would accept but turn around and give Dan Haren the same amount. Not sure I understand the logic behind not securing a free draft pick.
I think you answered your own question there…they didn’t want Edwin Jackson anymore. I would assume Dan Haren easily projects to be much better than Jackson in 2013.
Anyone see the Dale Sveum interview from the winter meetings? Sveum is cool as fuck. He got shot in the head a couple weeks ago by Robin yount and picked the pellet out of his ear with a pair of pliers. Great interview
I’ll save everyone a lot of time: nothing exciting is going to happen.
I think they exhausted all the announcements yesterday, and one of the announcements was from WGN, not the Cubs
Actually, the official announcement came from the Cubs…and the ultimate decision was Crane Kenney’s, not WGNs.
well then, that was the big announcement for the offseason, we can now begin to dissect the roster and complain about the rotation
woohoo!
That’s pretty much true. I don’t expect there will be any acquisition that the Cubs will make this year that is more exciting (except for Julie) than Deshaies joining the Cubs broadcast booth.
The Cubs are “in” on Yunel Escobar. I’m sure his homophobic eye black will be a welcome addition to the neighborhood.
Why?
Escobar was the starting shortstop for the Jays, wasn’t he?
I guess this Castro kid isn’t going to work out.
He would play 3B. Dude seems like a clubhouse cancer though and I’m sure The Ricketts sister would just love having him on the team.

http://www.rotoworld.com/player/mlb/4268/yunel-escobar Looks like 5 million this coming season then team option 5 million for both 14 and 15.
He might be a fit but everything I’ve read he’s a huge cancer.
Can’t the Cubs put some clauses in the contract to shut him up, or he does not get paid/gives $$ back to the team?
It’s not his mouth that is much of a problem as his ability to write slurs in spanish.
From a purely baseball point of view, I hate that bleach-haired creepy homophobic fuck.
hair color is an advanced statistic, isn’t it?
Indicative of dickheadedness.
See: Millar, Kevin
I’ve only heard a few whispers about this, but I really think the Cubs should go after Mark Reynolds.

defense, smefence…who needs that?
After almost being traded to Chicago, Dan Haren signs with the Nats for 1 year, 13M.
Gonzalez, Strasburg, Zimmerman, Haren, Detweiler. Wow. Going to be fun next year.
I can’t even name anyone on the Cubs rotation anymore. Who the hell pitches for this team now?
Garza, Spellcheck…
Bueller…
Bueller…
Bueller…
I forgot about Garza since he was injured. I forgot about Spellcheck because I don’t like picturing him now that Julie describes him as a foot with hair.
Turk Wendall
I can’t wait to see how Davey Johnson screws this up.

I think we should trade for Ndamukong Suh and let him play 3B. If someone tries to round the basepaths he can just give em a swift kick or something.
Unfortunately, he’ll probably spend most of the season suspended for his actions…if not for failing a PED test before.
He would entertain me while he wasn’t suspended though. We need Farnsworth back or something.
I think Farnsworth is a free agent this year…so there you go!
Bleh. So that took longer than I thought.
Next up: Yuniesky Betancourt.
Bielema is ditching Wisconsin to coach in Arkansas.
Even though I thought he was overrated as a coach, good riddance.
Don’t worry, He’ll be on his snowmobile with a babe and wreck and you’ll have him right back
Well…all I care about is Wisconsin football being shittier. Hopefully this starts a big downward trend for the program.
If Univ of Wisconsin had any guts they would fire him immediately and not allow him to coach the bowl game.

he said Garza is wound up like a top and rearing to go
Link??
I read that in the Tribune-is Dale sure Robin Yount didn’t do it on purpose?
Still waiting for the “Proper Post”.
Dale got shot by Robin Yount. I’m not saying anything more.
