It’s Day 2 of Cubs Con, and I still feel no real burning desire to be there. I really feel no burning desire to have gotten up at 6:30 to get there at 7:30 to get a seat for the 8:30 “Meet the Management” session.
Thanks to Comcast Sports Net, we can all feel like we’re at Cubs Con!
I’ll keep tossing up video links as they become available.
We also got this little nugget about the Cubs talking to the Diamondbacks about Justin Upton:
The Chicago Cubs and the Arizona Diamondbacks recently discussed the feasibility of a trade that would have sent right fielder Justin Upton to the Cubs, according to two major league sources.
According to both sources, the Diamondbacks asked for two-time All-Star Starlin Castro in return for Upton. The Cubs, trying to build a solid base of young players in their somewhat depleted system, balked at trading a 22-year-old shortstop for a 25-year-old right fielder and cut off talks.
I’m not sure how interesting this is, given that many outlets have reported that the Chicago Cubs are one of four teams on Upton’s “no-trade” list, which Upton invoked to block a trade to Seattle a few weeks back.
Another video, this time Tom Ricketts talking about Sammy and the renovation:

Upton for Castro?
Nope.
One nutcase for another. We lose on position scarcity.
Now if we could get Stanton for Castro……
RIP Earl Weaver.
Loved the guy.
And now RIP Stan Musial.
What a rotten day for baseball.
Just saw that on the news. I wish the news would have more on Musial and less on Armstrong/girlfriend hoaxes…
They were old. It was their time.
You really are a calloused snide little asshole, aren’t you?
some quick thoughts on the renovation plans
1. The announcement to restore the facade to 1930′s era might be my favorite news, I know I harp on this a lot, but my annoyance at poor facade design in general, and in specific with Wrigley is a major pet peeve.
2. the Friday 3:05 start. This amuses me since I thought they swapped the 3:05 start for more night games 10 years ago. I lived off the Addison stop back when they had 3:05 starts and it was the worst commute home, you try to get off the L just as everyone is trying to get on, can’t walk through the platform and in general it was miserable. I loved living over there, and handled the crazy traffic & the thousands of fans, but those 3:05 games I dreaded. Now as a fan, those games are pretty awesome, work a half day, go to the park, go to dinner, its great, but I imagine the local residents are going to have something to say.
3. The images were a mixed bag for me. Some of the sections were pretty informative, some are off in a way that if I were in a review looking at those I’d follow up with some questions on feasibility and scale. But thats to be expected in this type of drawing.
4. Glad to hear some of the big items were the non-sexy stuff like concrete repair and roof replacement.
I still say we should build a new stadium but if this is the alternative, its pretty intriguing. I have heard it many times over the years that players don’t wanna sign and play with the cubs in large part because of the facilities. Next offseason at the earliest we can begin woo’ing FA’s with our new up to par player facilities that will be ready by opening day 2014.
Things are really really starting to come together. Ownership, Real Front Office thats adequately staffed, and Minor League System. We have the last of our bad contracts coming off books after the following season.
Were just a few years away from a answer to a new TV deal whether it be a network of our own or a deal with csn/wgn. Either way dividends are coming in a big way.
If the City eases the taxes that will be yet another battle won.
This is the most excited I’ve ever been to be a Cubs fan. Sustained success on the baseball field is coming and coming soon!
I’m not so sure about the renovation plans. Only 2.2 Soriano Contracts over 5 years in renovation? Can we add in a no trade clause or a few extra player option years for good measure?
+1 for making jokes out of things that aren’t normall funny, like Soriano contracts.
