The goals keep coming for the New York Red Bulls

Oh what a night for the New York Red Bulls when they went to meet the Wizard of Oz! In front of a crowd of 20,000+ Sporting Kansas City supporters, the Red Bulls went in, played the game and came home with three points in their carry on luggage. Really, you couldn’t ask for a better game. Yes, the downside is that we had players going down, substitutions made and scary moments at the end. We now know that New York’s win and the Montreal Impact’s loss to DC United, puts Mike Petke and company in the top spot of the Eastern Conference. If you haven’t already figured it out – the Red Bulls are serious about taking home a certain Cup at the end of the 2013 season.

In their last few meetings, the Red Bulls were able to get a goal against Sporting Kansas City but yesterday’s game had them scoring two in just five minutes thanks to Lloyd Sam.

“I’m extremely proud of our team. We showed character today. Sporting is a phenomenal team and they showed that today,” said Head Coach, Mike Petke.

SKC had their chances and were able to get two by keeper, Luis Robles. It goes without saying that Kansas City is a great team but New York showed up ready to work and take the lead spot for the Eastern Conference.

I for one was happy when that final whistle blew. Nearly 100 minutes of soccer were done and if anyone had suspected the final ten minutes would be anything short of dramatic – let’s just say – they were not. In a don’t touch your remote moment, things got heated when Kosuke Kimura went down after a challenge, with no card given, head coach, Mike Petke visibly upset was ejected in those final moments. Kimura suffered a concussion and a perforated right ear drum, he was discharged from the hospital and headed back with his team back to New Jersey today.

And finally, here’s a photo that Tim Cahill tweeted last night after the game. As if we didn’t love Tim enough – he had to do this…really, thank you. Where do I send the Edible Arrangement?

The team travels to Columbus to take on the Crew next week. The quest to hold onto the top spot is now more important than ever. Can they do it? Will they do it? We will all have to cross our fingers that they can.
