31 Prospects in 31 Days: Kyle Hudson, #31

And here is the final part of my opus!

Kyle Hudson was the ‘extra prospect’ added in BA’s supplement to their prospect handbook. He racked up a total of 15 varsity letters in high school: 4 in football, 4, in basketball, 4 in track and 3 in baseball. Basically, we can’t doubt the kid’s athleticism. He was the Illinois State Champion in the high jump back in 2004. He’s good. He went to play at the University of Illinois on a football scholarship, but he also played baseball there, and he did well enough to catch scouts’ eyes.

He doesn’t have the best baseball instincts just yet, and his swing’s still inconsistent. However, he’s working on it – after adjusting his stance to make it wider in late 2010, he improved his batting considerably. His best tool is easily his speed – he hits for absolutely no power – but right now he hits way too many fly balls and is caught stealing too often. The Orioles will therefore keep him in Frederick for the time being to work on his baseball fundamentals before trying to bump him up to Bowie. He’s an amazing raw athlete, but he really needs to channel these skills into baseball more to figure out exactly how to become a better player and advance through the system.
