2017/18 Premier league team of the season

April 29, 2018Football Standard

The Premier League season is nearly at a close and the stakes are still high for many of the clubs, particularly those towards the bottom of the table. West Brom, the club who are propping up the table require a miracle if they are to survive this season, with Swansea City only requiring a further two points to relegate the Baggies.

Home fixtures against Stoke City and Southampton, in 19th and 18th place respectively, mean Swansea are in with a great chance of not only relegating West Brom, but also from preventing the other two from gaining ground on them. With a four point cushion over both Southampton and Stoke, should Swansea defeat both, it will be hard to see past Swansea surviving. Premier League betting predicts that the bottom three will remain as they are and in the same order.

At the other end of the table, Manchester City have already wrapped the title up, following Manchester United’s shock defeat at home to West Brom. Manchester United need just one win to ensure their place in the Champions League next season, although they could still miss out on second place, with both Liverpool and Tottenham in touching distance of them.

Liverpool’s season has finished strongly, with the potential for both a second place finish in the Premier League and a place in the Champions League final. Liverpool’s season has been a success due to the form of Mo Salah, who is arguably the best transfer of the summer after his move from AS Roma for around £35 million.

Salah has helped Liverpool against his former club in the semi-finals of the Champions League, with the Egyptian forward scoring two goals in Liverpool’s 5-2 first leg win at Anfield. Roma will be hoping Salah has an off day for the return leg at the Stadio Olimpico, but with Salah on course to finish as top scorer in the Premier League and one of the top scorers in the Champions League, he will be desperate to score as many goals as possible in the remaining matches of the season.

Tottenham only have Champions League qualification to play for, after being knocked out by Juventus in the second round of the Champions League and being knocked out of the FA Cup in the semi-final by Manchester United. They will be needing to fend off Chelsea in the league if they are to hold onto the Champions League qualifying spot.

The teams at the top of the table make up the bulk of our predicted Premier League Team of the Season, which you can see on the infographic below.
